Selection of Optimum Pollution Load Reduction and Water Quality Improvement Approaches Using Scenario Based Water Quality Modeling in Little Akaki River, Ethiopia

نویسندگان

چکیده

The collective impacts of rapid urbanization, poor pollution management practices and insufficient sanitation infrastructure have driven the water quality deterioration in Little Akaki River (LAR), Ethiopia. Water modeling using QUAL2Kw was conducted LAR aimed at selecting optimal improvement load reduction approaches based on evaluation five scenarios: modification point sources (PS) (S1), nonpoint (NPS) (S2), simultaneous PS NPS (S3), application local oxygenators fish passages cascaded rock ramps (S4), an integrated scenario (S5). Despite S1 resulting average Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) (17.72%), PO4-P (37.47%), NO3-N (19.63%), objective (WQO) could not be attained. Similarly, though significant found by S2 S3 evaluation, it did secure permissible BOD LAR. Besides, as part instream measure, a evaluated (S4) resulted load. All individual scenarios were successful hence integration (S5) that gave relatively higher pollutant rate ultimately better approach to improve loads river. In conclusion, control strategy integrally incorporating use source-based wastewater treatment, diffuse through best measures such feasible for river management, reduction, aquatic life protection sustainable development catchment.

Evaluation of Gorganrood river water quality based on surface water quality indicators in Gonbad Kavous

Background and Objective: Increased untreated wastewater and unsustainable development of agriculture has deteriorated water quality of rivers. The aim of this study was to determine the quality of water in Gorganrud River basin using NSFWQI IRWQISC and Liou Pollution Index and compare them with the global standards. To do this, GIS software.was used Materials and Methods: In this study, 5 sam...

Modeling Floodplain Filtration for the Improvement of River Water Quality

A mathematical model was developed to describe a treatment method of floodplain filtration for the improvement of river water quality. The process consists of spraying poor quality river water onto the river floodplains and thus allowing soil filtration to treat water before it gets back again into the main river stream. This technique can be readily employed in Korea because it exploits the ch...

Assessment of water quality in Blinaja River Basin (Kosovo) using the Canadian Water Quality Index (WQI)

Kosovo has limited natural water resources which should be well managed. This is recently realised through quantitative and qualitative monitoring of both surface and groundwater and by characterizing their quality according to their destination. In this paper, the Water Quality Index (WQI) developed by the Canadian Council of Environment Ministers (CCME WQI) was applied to evaluate the groundw...
